The main scenic attraction is the Krasnoyarsk Pillars — a state nature reserve located in the spurs of the Eastern Sayans, on the right bank of the Yenisei. Local rocks are called pillars because of their shape. They are narrow and high — from 60 to 600 meters, and the age ranges from 450 to 600 million years. Scientists suggest that the pillars were formed due to the powerful pressure of magma, which could not break through to the surface of the earth, and their bizarre outlines were formed by winds and rains.
The nature reserve "Krasnoyarsk Pillars" was created and received the status of the state in 1925 on the initiative of local residents. People sought not only to protect the rocks from destruction (they were used as ordinary building material in the early 20th century), but also to preserve the magnificent nature of the surrounding area. A lot of amazing, including rare, plants grow near the rocks themselves, many animals and birds live. Many representatives of the local flora and fauna are listed in the Red Book.
